Much like Mozilla’s Firefox web browser, Thunderbird offers plenty of flexibility, including the ability to collect all of your email accounts in one place. I can't find any documentation or support material discussing these yellow anchor icons. As far as desktop email clients go, Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular choice among users.

I've found no way to prevent these icons from appearing except to save the Word file as plain text, copy it and paste it into Thunderbird, and then laboriously redo all the italics I wanted in it by hand. Even selecting a strip of text containing the icon and deleting it removes the text but still leaves the icon there. I can't select them and delete them from the email message text putting the cursor after one and hitting backspace just deletes the letter to its left, without touching the anchor icon. I can't see anything in the Word file that would cause them to appear. Sometimes when I paste text from MS Word into the body of an email message I'm composing, it appears with little square yellow icons with what look like anchors on them, scattered apparently at random through the pasted text.
